Can a printer print on thermal paper?

No, standard printers, such as inkjet and laser printers, cannot print on thermal paper. Thermal paper is a type of paper that is coated with a heat-sensitive layer, and it relies on thermal printers for the printing process.

Thermal printers use heat to produce images on thermal paper. There are two main types of thermal printing technologies: direct thermal and thermal transfer.

Direct Thermal Printing:

In direct thermal printing, heat is applied directly to the thermal paper, causing a chemical reaction that results in the formation of an image. Direct thermal printing is commonly used for applications like receipt printing in point-of-sale systems.
Thermal Transfer Printing:

Thermal transfer printing uses a ribbon (usually made of wax or resin) and a print head to transfer the ink from the ribbon onto the thermal paper. This method is often used for creating durable labels and barcodes.
Since standard inkjet and laser printers do not generate the necessary heat for direct thermal printing and lack the mechanisms for handling thermal paper or ribbons, they are not compatible with thermal paper. Attempting to use thermal paper in a standard printer would not produce any print output, and it could potentially damage the printer.
